The chawan, the matcha bowl is the central object of the Japanese tea ceremony. Every other tool in the practice exists in relation to it: the chasen whisks inside it, the chashaku measures into it, the chakin wipes its rim. It is held with both hands, turned before drinking, and in the formal context of chado, considered as carefully as any other element of the gathering. This is not incidental, the chawan is where the tea is made and where it is received, and its weight, texture, and glaze are felt directly in the hands of the person drinking.

This chawan is made from high-fired stoneware and finished in a kebo matte glaze,  a surface treatment that references the long tradition of ash and iron glazes in East Asian ceramics, where beauty comes from restraint and from the honest character of fired clay. The glaze moves from a deep iron-black at the foot and lower body to a softer, ashen grey at the rim, with subtle mineral freckling across the surface. In different lights it reads differently, cooler and more graphite in daylight, warmer and more complex in the evening. Each piece varies slightly, as all kebo-glazed work does.

Form and function:

The bowl is wide-mouthed and generously proportioned, the shape best suited to whisking, giving the chasen room to move freely through the matcha without the tines catching on the sides. The interior is smooth and dark, which makes the vivid green of ceremonial matcha striking against it. A small pouring spout is cut into the rim: a quiet functional detail that makes it easy to share a bowl or decant the last of the tea cleanly.

The foot (kodai) is hand-finished and slightly irregular, a mark of the handmade process rather than a flaw, and a quality prized in the Japanese ceramic tradition where the foot of a chawan is considered by collectors to be as telling as any other part of the piece.

Using your chawan:

To prepare matcha in a chawan: warm the bowl first with a small amount of hot water, which you then discard. This prevents thermal shock to the stoneware and brings the bowl to temperature so the matcha stays warm longer. Sift 1–2 chashaku scoops (approximately 1.5–2g) of ceremonial-grade matcha into the warmed bowl. Add 70–80ml of water at around 75–80°C, not boiling, which would damage the amino acids and produce bitterness. Whisk in a brisk W or M motion with your chasen until a smooth, frothy layer forms on the surface. Drink from the bowl directly, turning it slightly in both hands before the first sip — a small ritual acknowledgement of the care taken in its making and yours.

Pairing and gifting:

This bowl is designed as part of a cohesive set with our Kebo Glaze Chasen Holder, the same glaze, the same understated palette. Together they make a considered and complete gift for anyone beginning or deepening a matcha practice.

Care:

Hand wash only. Not dishwasher or microwave safe. As with all dark matte glazes, light marks from use will develop over time and are a natural characteristic of the surface. The bowl will season gently with use.
