The two most used objects in a daily matcha practice are the chawan and the chasen holder. The bowl is where the tea is made and received; the holder is what keeps the whisk in good condition between every bowl. This set pairs both in the kebo matte glaze, presented together in a premium gift box with a foam insert that holds each piece securely: a complete and coherent starting point, or a considered upgrade for an existing practice.
The kebo glaze is a matte, iron-rich stoneware finish that moves from deep iron-black at the foot to a softer, ashen grey at the rim, with subtle mineral speckle across the surface that makes each piece slightly different from the last. It is a surface in the tradition of the wabi-sabi aesthetic, where beauty comes from the honest character of fired clay rather than from applied decoration: quiet, grounded, and designed to improve with familiarity rather than to impress at first glance.
What is included:
Chawan (matcha bowl): A wide-mouthed, high-fired stoneware matcha bowl in the kebo glaze, proportioned to give a bamboo chasen full freedom of movement during whisking. The smooth dark interior provides a clean ground against which the vivid green of ceremonial-grade matcha reads clearly. A small pouring spout is cut into the rim for clean serving and sharing. The kodai (foot ring) is hand-finished with the natural slight irregularity of a piece shaped by hand. For full detail on the bowl, including glaze history and preparation guidance, see the individual Kebo Glaze Chawan listing.
Chasen tate (whisk holder): A ceramic chasen holder in the matching kebo glaze, shaped to receive the handle of a standard bamboo chasen and support the tines on a raised interior dome as they dry after each preparation. This prevents the tines from flattening or splaying over time, which is the primary cause of chasen deterioration. Consistent use of a chasen holder is the single most effective practice for extending the life of a quality whisk. For full detail, see the individual Kebo Glaze Chasen Holder listing.
Who this set is for:
As a gift: the bowl-and-holder pairing is the most visually coherent gift in the collection. Both pieces share the same glaze and the same palette, and the premium gift box with foam insert means the set arrives presentation-ready without any additional wrapping. It suits anyone beginning a matcha practice as well as those who already prepare matcha daily and want a matched set to replace mismatched pieces.
For your own setup: if you already have a chasen and chashaku, this 2-piece set gives you the two ceramic pieces needed to complete a full traditional matcha preparation setup. A 100-tine bamboo chasen (百本立) and bamboo chashaku are available separately in our collection and can be added to complete the tool set.
The kebo glaze and the wabi-sabi tradition:
The kebo surface sits firmly within the Japanese ceramic tradition of iron-glazed stoneware, where the interaction of iron-rich clay and matte glaze at high kiln temperatures produces a surface that is simultaneously austere and complex. It shares its aesthetic values with the great ash-glazed wares of Shigaraki and the restrained iron finishes prized in formal chado (the Japanese way of tea): a glaze that asks you to look closely, and rewards you when you do.
Care:
All ceramic pieces: hand wash only, not dishwasher or microwave safe. The kebo matte glaze will develop a gentle patina with regular use, which is a natural quality of iron-rich stoneware rather than a sign of wear.
